The Southeastern Microscopy Society holds an annual meeting in the month of May.
Our annual meetings are held in rotating cities across the southeastern United States, giving members the opportunity to experience the rich diversity of our region while connecting with colleagues from Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Typically spanning two and a half days, these events are thoughtfully designed to balance scientific exchange, hands-on learning, and professional networking.
The program features a dynamic mix of workshops, in-depth scientific presentations, and the prestigious Ruska Student Competition, which showcases the talent and innovation of the next generation of microscopists. These sessions foster dialogue between students, established scientists, and industry professionals, creating an environment where ideas and techniques are freely shared.
In addition, the Robert Simmons Micrograph Competition celebrates the creativity and technical skill of our members through striking visual imagery. Entries must be captured using light or electron microscopes to highlight the beauty and detail achievable through this medium. While a wide range of subjects and techniques are encouraged, macro lens images do not qualify, ensuring the focus remains on true light and electron microscopy. This competition is a favorite among attendees, blending scientific precision with artistic expression.
A hallmark of our meetings is the active participation of our industry partners and vendors, whose expertise and cutting-edge technologies are integral to the success of SEMS. Their exhibits and presentations not only introduce attendees to the latest advancements in microscopy and related instrumentation, but also reflect their ongoing commitment to supporting our community’s growth and achievements.
