The Southeastern Microscopy Society (SEMS) is a vibrant community of scientists, educators, and professionals dedicated to advancing the art and science of microscopy. Our members represent a broad range of disciplines—including the life, medical, and physical sciences—united by a shared passion for exploring the microscopic world and pushing the boundaries of discovery.
Founded in 1964 by electron microscopists eager to exchange ideas and expertise, SEMS has grown into a regional hub for knowledge-sharing, professional development, and collaboration. Today, our membership draws individuals from across the southeastern United States, including Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. This diverse network of professionals enriches our meetings, workshops, and outreach efforts with a wealth of perspectives and expertise. Read more about our history here!
Through annual meetings, technical workshops, student engagement, and networking opportunities, SEMS fosters connections that span institutions, disciplines, and career stages. Whether you are a seasoned researcher, an emerging scientist, or simply curious about microscopy’s role in modern science, SEMS offers a welcoming environment to learn, share, and contribute to the advancement of microscopy and its applications.
